Some cities are closely linked to one particular sight or building - and for San Francisco this is definitely the case for the Golden Gate Bridge. Although not very close to downtown San Francisco, the bridge has become one with its city ever since it was constructed in the late 1930s. When I visited on a beautiful winter day, I decided that cycling across would be a great thing to do.
So I set out from the city centre, paddling along the waterfront and the parks. residential areas with yachting harbours and beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay area, Alcatraz and the Bridge. At Fort Mason you can get very close to the bridge. From there, a little climb up the bridge is inevitable - the reward is a sensational view of the city and and huge pylons and peculiarly coloured steel constructions all around you.
While cycling over the bridge you realize how high it actually is. Every now and then, special phones have been installed to give counsel for those who want use the bridge for suicidal purposes. "Call before you jump". And when you arrive at the other side, a short descent brings you into the laid back village of Sausalito. From there, it is a short hop back to the city by boat.
