In New York, especially Manhattan is full of dynamism, concrete, people everywhere and traffic almost 24 hours a day. To compensate for this overkill of urban chaos Central Park has an important function. Probably one of the biggest city parks in the world it occupies a large chunk of the island and lies as a huge bombcrater in the cityscape. A visit to Central Park is one of the absolute musts of any visit to the Big Apple.
Central Park is the perfect place to go running, skating or cycling, as far as sports are concerned. Running around the Park is actually one of my items of any day in the city, almost a ritual. And whatever the weather, I never run alone. Apart from this, you can walk around the lakes and hills, listen to local musicians performing in the open air, rent a rowing boat or even a gondola, or visit a museum.
The pictures you see here were taken on a visit when snow just started to melt. This gave the Park a special and silent touch. Squirrels running around the snow, people langlaufing, chunks of snow falling off tree branches with a soft "pop". Grass trying to stick out of the white cover, yearning for spring. All along, that wonderful sound of snow under my shoes. Central Park seemed more peaceful than ever.
