Double deckers were a simple solution to transporting more passengers in a single bus. Over the years, though, the typical red double decker bus has turned into the prime symbol of London, while still being used as a convenient means of transportation in the metropole. Think of it: wherever in the world you see a double decker, you immediately think of London. The double decker has been modernized, but the classic model remains the prototype.
One of the advantages of those older models is that they have an open entry/exit door at the rear. Very convenient if you want to jump on or off the bus at the last moment, or whenever the bus stops (not necessarily a bus stop). Once inside, sitting at the front seat of the top level is the obvious place to have a perfect view of the city gliding by.
Despite the perfectly functioning underground system, the double decker buses still very much dominate the streets in London. The model may have been improved and modernized, all buses are red. At times, streets are coloured red when a group of buses arrive at the same time. It is almost impossible to imagine London without them!
