Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur | Malaysia | Asia

[Visited: January 2000]

Kuala Lumpur is a city which might not sound exciting compared to other oriental cities, but it certainly merits a visit. After arriving by night train from the North of the country, on a Sunday morning at 5, it looked quite empty. But after some time it came more alive, and various very different buildings certainly asked for attention.

Close to the railway station, there is a new, very modern mosque, with an unconventional architecture. The traditional Islamic green i s still there, as well as a daring structure. I have always been attracted to the Islamic architecture, and must admit that also the modern version is certainly attractive. Still, Kuala Lumpur is an oriental country, so a few blocks from the mosque, there are Chinese as well as Hindu temples.

And apart from those buildings which are testimonies to the rich religious melting pot to be found in Malaysia, more clearly than in most other surrounding countries, you can also walk down a street with older bulidings, just to get a glimpse of the highest buildings in the world around the corner. A truly amazing city!
