Dubai in the United Arab Emirates has grown from a fishing village to a modern city. Its growth has been made possible also because it attracted lots of foreigners; these come from both the east and the west. Hence, Dubai has become an international city with people with a very different background, also religiously. However, the state religion is islam, and with all the modern architecture for which the city is famous, you can still see proof of the fact that Dubai is, after all, a city in a moslim country.
In Dubai, you can see classical mosques, small ones almost hidden amidst the buildings dwarfing them. At the same time, you can also come across very modern mosques which seem to blend in well with the modern architecture of much of the city. At times, you can find other houses of worship and there are churches, Hindu and Sikh temples. Obviously, mosques dominate the scene in Dubai where it comes to religious places.
After seeing a lot of modern, daring architecture, after walking the bustling souks, the electronic shops, the busy streets choked with traffic, it almost comes as a surprise when you stumble upon a large mosque built in traditional style. The domes, the slender, elegant minarets, the calls for prayer filling the air bring a moment of rest from everyday life, and make you realize that you are in Arabia.
