U.S.A.: SoHo

SoHo | U.S.A. | Americas

[Visited: March 2001]

Squeezed between Little Italy, Chinatown and Greenwich, SoHo (South of Houston Street) is another distinct area of New York. Once considered a wasteland by the city government, it has now become the artistic area of the city.

The artistic element can be found in the first place in the numerous galleries scattered around the area, and the graffitti that can be found here and there on the walls. More professionally, there is also a huge mural by Haas. I actually missed it at first because it blends in with the houses surrounding it.

The area is also renowned for its architecture. Iron-clad buildings line the streets, emergency stairs hanging out of the houses as if they were the stairs of a ship about to dock in a harbour. The play of sunlight on the houses, and inevitably the shadows caused by other buildings, brings out the brilliance of the designers of this area.
